Credit Reference Letter

Credit Reference Letter
The Credit Reference Letter is something the EO & Visits Administrator will create and send you a few months before you arrive. The letter basically states that your salary is $xxx Canadian, the MOD will provide you with the funds for your accommodation and we would be grateful if this letter could help facilitate the signing of leases or approval for credit cards. Your base salary is calculated at the current exchange rate and rounded up. The figure will not contain any allowances.

Advance of Pay

Pay and Allowances – GAU supports all.
Starting off in Canada. A few points that you should be aware of in the run up to your arrival in country that will result in an outlay of funds:
a. There will be a need to purchase some household items not covered by OFPS such as TV, stereo, DVD player. You will also need to arrange cable/satellite, broadband and phone packages (mobile and landline as required).
b. You will need to purchase or arrange the lease of a vehicle. You may also need to purchase winter tyres if they are not included with the vehicle purchased or leased.
c. Some additional clothing will be required in order to be prepared for the winter months.
Note – It may be possible to purchase some of these items from your predecessor.

During your arrivals briefing you will be given advice on pay and allowances:
a. Advance of Pay. An individual assigned overseas (to North America) from the UK may receive an advance of up to 4 months net pay. The advance will be repaid over 12 months, although an individual may elect to pay off the debt more quickly if they choose. Application must be made via JPA with your outgoing unit prior to arrival. Funds can then be transferred to your Canadian bank account by either direct transfer or cashing of a sterling cheque.
b. Subsistence Allowance. An advance of subsistence allowance may be sought via the GAU if you are temporarily staying in hotel accommodation.

Subsistence Allowance. If permanent accommodation is not immediately available on arrival to your new duty station, subsistence allowance may be claimed for yourself and your dependants. In addition to subsistence allowance, you may claim taxi fares incurred from airport to hotel when you arrive in Ottawa for your briefing. You will be asked to provide receipts for all expenditure via the GAU.
