BDLS runs a non-for-profit ‘winter chalet’ in the old village of Mt Tremblant

From approximately the end of November to mid-April, BDLS rents out a semi-detached home in Mt Tremblant about 10 minutes from the ski hill, 2-hours from Ottawa. This recently renovated 3-bedroom (1 Queen bed, 1 double bed and a room with twin beds = sleeps 6), 3-floor home has a fireplace, comfy living room, washing machine and tumble dryer, kitchen and a floor to peel off wet -winter clothing and boots. Instructions on how weeks and weekends are allocated will be sent out in the autumn. One of our Ottawa Exchange Officer’s is the liaison between the chalet owner and BDLS. It is a self-catered and self-cleaned rental – leave it how you’d like to find it!

Borrow a canoe or stand up paddleboard from BDLS

BDLS has two inflatable Stand Up Paddleboards for you to ‘rent/borrow’. The admin fee is $5. The SUP comes in a large ‘backpack’ style bag and contains the board, ankle strap, paddle, pump(s)). We have a small selection of life vests as well but it is recommended that you purchase your own that fits properly. Please email to BDLS to book.
BDLS also has two fibre glass canoes for borrow/rent for $5. Book with BDLS. Waterproof barrel , ratchet and straps, paddles, foam blocks etc. are provided.

Life vests/ life jackets: stores like Canadian Tire, Decathlon, Walmart and Sail will sell life jackets/life vests.

The British High Commission has a social club called “BOSCO” = British High Commission Ottawa Social Committee Social activities are organised and publicised via email to the staff lists and the Community Liaison Officer will forward invites to the Spouse group. BDLS will forward social events to the SP’s forces.gc.ca accounts. Emails can be sent to/will come from an account called QandAcommittee @fcdo.gov.uk

Plan ahead and get your Canadian Chain of Command’s approval to travel to Ottawa for a 2 ½ day conference, usually held in September.

BDLS hosts a 2-day conference each year called “United Kingdom in Canada Defence Engagement Conference”. This is a chance to meet and the DA and a variety of external speakers, who will speak about the UK in Canada and what that means for our 40+ Exchange Officer’s posted across Canada. There will be mingling, lunches, single-service break out sessions and a whole host of topics to be discussed. Information about registration, hotels, speakers etc. will be sent out around threee months prior to the event.
