Pets

Registration Requirements

Service Personnel (SP) relocating to Canada must ensure they comply with any municipal requirements for registering pets. Many towns and cities require cats and dogs to be registered with the local municipality. Registration typically includes a fee, which is not claimable under any entitlement.

SP must also familiarise themselves with any provincial or municipal breed-specific regulations, as some breeds may be restricted or prohibited depending on the location.

Pet registration is often used to support local animal services and to help reunite pets with owners should they go missing. Registration is usually an annual requirement.

Examples of municipalities with pet registration requirements include:

  • Ottawa: Pet registration | City of Ottawa
  • Petawawa: Online Pet Licensing Program – Town of Petawawa
  • Calgary: Pet licences and responsible pet ownership (calgary.ca)
  • Toronto: Pet Licensing – City of Toronto
  • Halifax: Dog ownership | Animal Services | Rules | Halifax

Pet Insurance

Pet insurance is a personal decision and is not mandated as part of an overseas posting. SP are encouraged to research available providers and review the coverage options carefully. Insurance costs and service levels vary significantly between provinces and municipalities.

SP may find it useful to seek informal advice from predecessors or colleagues who can share their experiences with different insurers. However, each individual should conduct their own research to determine what level of coverage—such as liability, illness or accident protection—is most appropriate for their pet’s needs.
